Driving Examiners Make Mistakes Too!

DSA driving examiners are human beings and thus not perfect and they do make mistakes as happened during a driving test I had today.

The learner had already told me she wanted me to sit in on her driving test, so I was there in the car park when we started proceedings with the bay parking exercise.

On the driving test the examiner can ask the candidate to perform a normal stop on the left around 4 times or more, so nothing seemed unusual when we were asked to pull up on the left, until my learner was asked to do a parallel parking exercise! Now I didn't say anything for 2 reasons first I wasn't sure why he asked for the exercise to be carried out, and there would be no point arguing there, but more importantly I didn't want to in anyway put my learner off by interrupting and she didn't seem to have noticed anything was wrong.

The rest of the driving test went without incident, a few driving errors none serious or dangerous, so I wasn't surprised when we got back to the test centre and my learner was told she had passed with only 5 driver errors and the examiner did apologise immediately about the 2nd manuever which didn't count.

It is very important that no matter what happens on the driving test, you as the candidate must concentrate and give it your best, even if a mistake is made it is better to wait till the end, as you don't want to be upset or get into an argument when the test is not finished. If you commit a serious fault after the examiner's mistke, you will still fail, and while you might be able to complain to the DSA, the best that will happen is you get a free retest which could still cost you money or time. It is also easier to challenge an examiner's conduct if your instructor is in the car than when you are alone.

DSA Examiner Driving Test Routes

As an instructor over the years I have seen some very good drivers get tripped up at some tricky places on some of the routes by examiners in the NW London area, so I have made these tutorial videos to cover these situations.

Each video covers what I have found out to the toughest route, and has additional tips on other places or things that you should be aware as a driving test candidate. These are offered as complimentary preparation materials to your lessons or private practice sessions.

  1. Well, I believe that if driving examiners make mistake then he is not the right qualified driving instructor. That is my opinion. Thanks.
